Mohammed Morsi, the deposed Egyptian President was on Tuesday transported by helicopter from the Borg al Arab Prison facility in Alexandria to the Police Academy in Eastern Cairo for onward movement to attend a jailbreak trial. Morsi testified at Tuesday’s trial.
The former President is one of the 130 people facing trial for a jailbreak that took place in Cairo during the Arab Spring uprising that sacked Hosni Mubarak from power. More than 20,000 inmates escaped from correctional facilities across Egypt then. Morsi and others have been charged with masterminding the escape with the help of Hamas and Hezbollah. They have also been charged with raiding prisons and killing soldiers and officers in Rafah as well as incicitement to murder.
The Muslim Brotherhood which brought Morsi to power has questioned the legitimacy of the trial.
