Things however changed and on October 16, 2005, the then Governor, Ayo Fayose and his Deputy, Hon Abiodun Olujimi were impeached, against what many believed was a presidential directive to spare Mrs Olujimi and pave way for her to become the first female Governor in the country

. In a brief ceremony, the then Chief Judge went on to swear Aderemi in as the Governor of Ekiti State, only for the President to declare a state of emergency in the state, thereby ensuring that the former Speaker did not govern the state for more than a few hours.
