Efforts and strategies put in place by the Ogun State Police Command to reduce highway robbery along the major and ever-busy expressways in Ogun State particularly Lagos-Ibadan and Sagamu-Ijebu Ode-Benin to the barest minimum seems to have started paying off. 2 young men who usually rob innocent Nigerians at the Sapade end of Lagos/Ibadan expressway were arrested on around 10. 40 pm on Saturday, while they were trying to block the road as usual.
While confirming the arrests, the spokesman of the Ogun State Police Command, Muyiwa Adejobi disclosed to Street Journal that the Police Anti Crime team attached to the expressway, while on surveillance, arrested one of the suspected robbers, the moment they were trying to barricade the road even before their robbery operation while the second one was arrested in the course of investigation.
He gave the names of the suspects arrested as Lukman Azeez and Lekan Okewo, both of Olugbo Village near Fidiwo in Ogun State. According to Adejobi, the suspects have confessed to robbing many commuters along the expressway and mentioned other members of their gang as Taiwo Maboroje( the bike man who escaped from the robbery scene) and Adewumi Olanrewaju, of the same Olugbo village. The PPRO stated that though both are now at large, all hands are on deck to get them apprehended.
He also stated that two locally made guns, cutlasses, one unregistered motorcycle and charms were recovered from the robbers. They are presently at the State Criminal Investigation Department Eleweran Abeokuta for thorough investigation; and will soon appear in court as directed by the Commissioner of Police Ogun State CP Ikemefuna Okoye.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police has advised road users to beware of hoodlums on motorcycles who deceive drivers and road users by raising false alarms of flat tyres or the likes with a view to robbing them on highways. He also assured Nigerians of adequate security of lives and property along the highways and in Ogun State in general.
