Tears flowed freely as the remains of Iyetade, daughter of Nigeria’s first Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka was laid to rest in Ibadan on Friday. The interment took place at the Ultimate Gardens, a private cemetery after a service at the Chapel of the Resurrection, University of Ibadan.
While commiserating with the family, Rev’d Kunle Oyelade used the opportunity to urge people to draw closer to God by giving their lives to Christ. He noted that it takes living a good life to ensure that good things are said after one’s departure from this world.
Those present at the funeral included Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, sisters of the deceased, Moremi and Peyibomi as well as her brother, Dr Olaokun Soyinka, a serving Commissioner in Ogun State, Ilemakin Soyinka, Bolu Onabolu and Dr Donald Duke, former Governor of Cross River State.
Iyetade, a poet and artiste was born on June 6, 1965 to Chief Mrs Olayide Soyinka and Prof Wole Soyinka. She had two children, Oreofe and Adeoto. She passed on after a brief illness on December 28, 2013.
