A blackout seems to be looming in some parts of the South West following an early morning fire at the National Control Centre of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria in Osogbo, Osun State. One of the powerful transformers at the centre was affected by the fire which started around 3 am on Friday.
The National Control Centre is a major transmission centre for the distribution of electricity in the country.
Eye witness accounts disclosed that the fire was not subdued till around 9 am as fire fighters battled for hours to save vital equipment in the centre. Security agents also moved in to control human and vehicular movement in the area.
With the fire and the repairs that will follow, the power situation may worsen in the country, especially areas that are being supplied from the centre. Some parts of Osun State were thrown into darkness as a result of the fire.
