Crisis as PDP Picks Consensus Guber Candidate in Ekiti

A drama is playing  out among top contenders for the PDP governorship ticket in Ekiti State.
The party which had slated its primaries for Saturday, 22nd of March 2014 made a u-turn recently and announced its decision to pick a consensus candidate out of the 14 people that had picked the nomination form of the party.
The PDP Presidential Consensus Committee headed by Chief Bode George met with the aspirants in Abuja some days ago where it revealed the intentions of the party to pick a consensus candidate out of them.
The party shocked the aspirants when they were told that the PDP Chairman, Adamu Muazu would communicate the name of the party’s consensus candidate to them within two days.
Sources revealed to Streetjournal that the PDP was trying to avert the crisis and violence that may erupt if there should be a primary election.
Streetjournal had earlier reported that security had been beefed up towards the primary which the party eventually kicked against.
The aspirants were said to have been asked to sign undertakings to support whoever emerges as the party’s flagbearer.
Many of the candidates were said to have shown their displeasure claiming they believe a consensus would only present a weak candidate for the party.
One of the candidates, a former-governor of the State, Ayo Fayose had threatened to sue the party as he vowed not to be a part of the plans of choosing a consensus candidate.
The ex-governor who spoke through his media aide, Idowu Adelusi reasoned that the choice of a consensus candidate is a form of imposition.
In a statement released yesterday, Fayose said ‘I reject consensus. I am ready to face other aspirants, after all there will be no consensus at the general election. I believe in party supremacy based on equity and fair play’.
A source revealed to Streetjournal that after much consultation between the President and stakeholders of the party in Ekiti State, the party has favoured Dayo Adeyeye as the consensus candidate while Captain Caleb Olubolade might be picked as his running mate.
