No fewer than 7 people were killed at the recruitment centres of the Nigerian Immigration Service.
Applicants numbering about 70,000 had converged on the National Stadium, Abuja which was one of the venues for the recruitment programme nationwide.
A stampede was said to have occurred at the Abuja centre which later led to the death of 7 applicants, one of them a pregnant woman.
The exercise in Lagos was said to have taken an odd dimension as youth who went for the recruitment protested and caused a heavy traffic gridlock in the city.
The job seekers numbering over a hundred thousand were said to have protested the poor handling of the exercise.
In Ibadan, it was also a similar occurrence at the Liberty Stadium where over eighty thousand interested candidates stormed the venue.
The candidates who were said to have arrived the centre at 7am in the morning were said to have also protested as the exercise did not commence till 4pm.
Many of the candidates who stood on their feet for long hours collapsed under the scorching sun.
Some of the candidates who spoke with Streetjournal expressed their sadness and claimed that the Immigration officials put them in the sun while they sat under the shade and had their breakfast and lunch in their presence.
At the Port Harcourt Centte, four people lost their lives as a result of a stampede. The stampede occured as applicants were being checked into the venue
Street Journal gathered that candidates at the back who were eager to enter starting pushing which caused some of those in front to fall. Some were trampled on while others died from suffocation.
It is recalled that 20 people died some years ago during a joint similar recruitment for the Nigerian Immigration, Nigerian Prisons Service and Customs.
Interior Minister, Comrade Abba Moro diaclosed on Saturday that only 4,555 of the applicants will be shortlsted nationwide.
