Survivors of the early morning explosion that killed about 200 people in Nyanya on Monday have disclosed that the explosive device that went off was placed in a Volkswagen Golf car that was driven to the park by an unknown person.
Witnesses disclosed that the explosion occurred at 6.30 am.
Dalhatu, one of the drivers of the high-capacity buses that were caught in the blast at the park confirmed that the blast came from a Golf. He also stated that the perpetrators waited till the buses in the front row were filled up before detonating the explosive device.
He said “we just heard a loud explosion and many people died instantly. In fact, many people were scattered into pieces.“
He also pointed out that apart from the big buses which are more popular in Abuja as “El-Rufai” buses, a number of smaller commercial vehicles were involved. Though he could not confirm the actual casualty figure, he said most of the people that lost their lives were passengers in smaller vehicles close to the Golf that exploded.
Street Journal’s findings revealed that injured victims are being treated in about seven hospitals while corpses were taken to the morgues at the General Hospitals in Nyanya and Asokoro, as well as the National Hospital.
