The Ogun State Police Command announced that its Special Anti Robbery Squad, led by Inspector Adeyemi Akeem on Friday busted a gang of armed robbers, that specialized in car-snatching , at Toll Gate, Otta, Ogun State around 6 pm.
The Police Command announced that 2 of the suspected robbers were killed while one was arrested.
The PRO of the Command, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi gave the name of the arrested gang member as Yusuf Ahmed. He also stated that the robbers had snatched a Mercedes Benz ML 320 Jeep with Registration Number LND 779 AQ from the owner at Dalemo area of Otta around 8 pm on Thursday. Adejobi said unknown to the robbers, the police team placed them under surveillance.
He made it known that having been involved in many robberies within and outside Ogun State; the syndicate had been on the wanted list of the command for the past one year.
The PPRO also pointed out that the suspect, Yusuf Ahmed, 21, is from Oja Oba in Ibadan Oyo State but resides in Temidire area of Otta in Ogun State
It was also revealed in the statement signed by the PPRO that Ahmed attended Command Secondary School, Ibadan and passed out in 2010.
Adejobi also stated that the suspect is an ex-convict, as he had before now been sentenced to a prison term for a similar offence. It was found out that Ahmed spent 9 months at Ikoyi Prison in Lagos State before his release.
The PPRO also pointed out that the same SARS team encountered another syndicate that specialized in Highway robberies in the state and beyond on Saturday 26th April along Abeokuta/Sagamu Expressway around 3.45 pm while heading towards Abeokuta to rob a business man of N 30 million.
One of the robbers was shot dead during the encounter while two who were injured were arrested with one pump action gun,3 locally made guns and 30 rounds of various ammunition.
One of the suspects is Obong Imeh, 37, an Efik man from Akpaboyo Local Government Council of Cross Rivers State, who resides at Ikenne Remo Ogun State claimed to be a father of three. He told the police he has been in the business for many years.
Adejobi also stated that “Ahmed is a strong man(spiritually) as he used to disappear whenever he encountered security operatives except his blood touches the ground before he could be arrested. So he was arrested when the police bullet hit him and his blood touched the ground.
The second suspect, Sarumi Jide,37, a father of 2 is from Ita Ajia,Ilorin Kwara State. He finished from the Technical College Ijebu Igbo Ogun State in 2010.
Sarumi is the Armourer to the syndicate and he claimed to be getting the arms from cult boys in Ijebu Ode whenever they had operations.
The commissioner of police ogun state CP Ikemefuna Okoye has ordered the SARS Ogun to carry out thorough investigation on the two cases and fish out other members of the two syndicates and their accomplices.
He however assured the general public of bringing the suspects to book so as to serve as deterrent to others in the state and Nigeria at large. He also reaffirmed his directive of putting officers and men of the command on their toes to continue the war against cultism in Ogun state as these revelations unfold on their connivance with armed robbers who terrorize the good people of the state”.
