The Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ ) Zone-B has condemned in strong terms the attack on the crew of African Independent Television (AIT) in Ikere Ekiti on Saturday, 24th May, 2014.
In a statement in Akure, the NUJ said the attack on the media outfit that went to cover LP campaign rally in Ikere was disheartening.
The Zone described the barbaric event as a dangerous dimension to political development in Ekiti State.
The union is of the opinion that the political class in Ekiti State seems not to have learnt anything from the country’s political history especially operation “wet ti e” in the defunct Western Region.
It decried the damage done to the station’s outside broadcast van as well as the equipment therein.
The union questions the rationale behind the attack on an innocent media outfit that was carrying out its constitutional duties.
It cautioned the political gladiators in Ekiti State to refrain from thuggery and other criminal actions that could turn the state to a theatre of absurd.
The union called on the police authority to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous act to serve as deterrent to others with evil intention.
It appealed to all security agencies in the state to provide adequate security for the lives and property of the people.
The union also stressed on the need for the provision of security personnel in all media outfits in Ekiti State to avert further attacks on them.
