ICPC Boss Clarifies ‘Stealing is not Corruption’ Statement

Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Mr Ekpo  Nta has cleared the air on a statement credited to him in which he was quoted to have stated that ‘’Stealing is not corruption’’

Clarifying the statement which was reported by a Nigerian newspaper, the ICPC boss explained: ” Stealing is corruption if it involves a public officer abusing his office for private gains as provided in sections 16 and 19 0f the ICPC Act ‘Stealing or theft’ as defined by the criminal code and penal code falls within police powers to investigate and prosecute.

The newspaper had published a report on Monday in which it quoted the ICPC Chairman as saying that stealing was being misjudged as corruption during a signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the commission and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) held last week at the commission’s headquarter in Abuja.
