Ebonyi Speaker, 13 Lawmakers Arrested!

The leadership tussle that has engulfed the Ebonyi State House of Assembly took another turn on Tuesday with the arrest and detention of the Speaker, Hon Helen Nwaobasi and no fewer than 13 others.
The incident happened less than 24 hours after the House resumed from a one-month recess. At Monday’s seating, Hon Chukwuma Nwazunku who had been impeached by 18 out of 24 members on July 21 was reinstated and he presided. The lawmakers present went on to pass a vote of confidence in the Speaker.
On Tuesday morning however, as the lawmakers who had gone to court to attend the hearing in the leadership tussle of the House between Hon Nwazunku and Helen Nwaobasi.
Nine of the members loyal to Nwazonku had challenged his removal, describing it as illegal. They therefore prayed the court to restrain Nwaobasi from parading herself as the Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly.
The 14 members were arrested as they left the court premises. Apart from Helen Nwaobasi, others arrested include the Deputy Speaker, Blaise Orji, Minority Leader, Enyi C. Enyi and the Minority Whip, Joseph Nwaobasi.
When contacted for comments, the spokesman of the Ebonyi State Command of the Nigeria Police Force said he was not aware the lawmakers were arrested.
