FG, Lagos Govt Disagree Over 5 Fresh Ebola Cases

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday announced that it has recorded five new suspected cases of Ebola Virus Disease.
While speaking at a press conference in Alausa, Ikeja on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris disclosed that two of the fresh cases were secondary contacts while the remaining three were primary contacts of Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian who brought the deadly virus into the country.
Idris said “the fresh suspected cases have increased the number of patients in isolation wards from two to six. Till date, we have recorded eight suspected cases, five of which were brought in yesterday. We have twelve confirmed cases on the whole out of which five have died and five have been discharged. We are currently following up on 213 contacts while 62 have completed the 21-day follow up.”
The Minister for Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu however disagreed and urged Nigerians to disregard any news of fresh cases of Ebola in the country.
The Minister’s media aide, Dan Nwomeh made the Minister’s position known via his twitter handle as he tweeted the following: “Minister of Health of Nigeria confirms that there’s no new case of Ebola in Nigeria”.
“Please disregard the rumours in social media.
“Reported case in Kaduna was a Nigerian soldier who returned from Sierra Leone, fell ill and was diagnosed for Ebola.
‘Result was negative.
“Minister of Health has also clarified the stories of a another Liberian who tested negative for Ebola in Nigeria.
“The Liberian was actually leaving Nigeria, was spotted by port health officials due to his high temperature.
“His sample was tested and result for Ebola was negative but positive for malaria.
“Was treated and allowed to continue his journey.”
