Fire Guts Popular Market in Ibadan

The popular Alesinloye Market in Ibadan was on Friday night gutted by fire. Though as of the time of filing the report, the cause of the fire remained unknown, it is largely believed to have been caused by power surge.
The shops around the car park were mostly affected.
Shop owners at the market were alerted via text messages and BlackBerry broadcasts which drew quite a number to the scene late on Friday.
It took some hours before the fire was brought under control and prevented from spreading further.
When Street Journal’s reporters visited the scene early on Saturday, smoke was still billowing from some of the shops while traders were seen all around with some wailing and bemoaning their losses. Some gathered in groups discussing how to settle the debts they incurred in the cause of stocking their shops.
Different opinions were held on what might have caused the fire. While some opined that it could be a result of a power surge, some others hod the belief that someone probably left a heating appliance on. Another group however said they would not rule out sabotage.
