PDP Refutes Rumours of Anointing Candidate for Oyo Governorship

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has refuted the rumours that it has anointed a particular governorship aspirant to fly the party’s flag in the 2015 governorship election.
For months, a large chunk of the politically conscious in Oyo State has been made to believe that the national arm of the party has decided to field one of the governorship aspirants as its governorship candidate.
A source close to the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’ azu disclosed to Street Journal that “when I asked him about the situation and that there are rumours flying that someone has been anointed as the candidate from Abuja, he said there was no truth in it.” Speaking further, he said “the Chairman said all the aspirants will be allowed to contest the primary election. He assured us there that the party has the intention of fielding whoever wins the primary election which will be the test of popularity for all the aspirants.”
Those in contention for the PDP’s ticket include former Governor Alao-Akala, former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, Seyi Makinde, an Engineer, Professor Soji Adejumo, a DFID consultant and former SUBEB Chairman as well as Alhaji Azeem Gbolarumi, a former Deputy Governor. Others in the rice include Engr. Femi Babalola, a Structural Engineer and businessman and Dr. Gbola Adetunji, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon.
However, Otunba Alao-Akala and Senator Folarin are believed by many to be the top contenders while the others are not leaving any stone unturned to endear themselves to the electorate.
Incidentally, the way the PDP is structured, only delegates will vote at the primary election. Delegates are of two types, statutory delegates and non-statutory delegates. While statutory delegates have the honour of being delegates as a result of the positions they hold, for example, Ministers, Members of the National Assembly, Hose of Assembly members, party executives and other positions, each ward must be represented by three delegates, one of who must be a woman. Oyo State has 351 wards.
While commenting on the issue, a former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon Kehinde Ayoola wrote on his Facebook wall “our people in PDP in particular and the enlightened populace in general have been fed for several months with the odious lie that the Presidency has ‘promised’ someone the PDP governorship ticket for Oyo State. The spin doctors first moved from “the state executives of the party is in our pockets” to “Jonathan is backing us”. Our people, especially unwary and innocent party members, have helped to circulate this lie for so long.
This is therefore the time to stop it. It is a LIE. The PDP is a big ocean that invites all kinds of fishermen to fish in it. It is not a private fish pond kept at the exclusive pleasure of the owner.
The Chief Promoter of this lie has tried, as we are aware, to see the President several times but did not succeed. He has been using methods common with 419ers including fear appeal to keep people in his grip. Our people must be told the truth. PDP gubernatorial ticket will be fought for and won at a Primary Election in which only Delegates will vote”.
Ayoola, who is on the campaign team of one of the aspirants disclosed that “we have been on the road meeting people. We were in Ibarapa this whole week. When we left Ibadan on Tuesday, we saw another aspirant going to Iseyin. Why did he travel to iseyin? Why is he meeting party members? Shebi, the president has promised him the ticket? Why bother to campaign? These are questions the people who believe the lie from their spin doctors ought to be asking!
They should also ask that we heard that Capt Olubolade was supposed to be the annointed Jonathan candidate for Ekiti, so what happened there? Ditto, Sen Isiaka Adeleke claimed that GEJ nominated him for Osun and what happened there?
The truth is that those spawning these lies do not even have a fraction of the credibility they claim to have with the Presidency as the highest institution in Nigeria. So also their records with the people are at the nadir (lowest)”.
