The National Working Committee NWC of the People’s Democratic Party PDP has sealed Akwa-Ibom Governorship For Eket Senatorial Zone After a review of the decision of the enlarged State Executive Committee of Akwa-Ibom state.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, a copy of which was made available to The Street Journal this evening in Abuja, the National Working Committee (NWC) however, accepted and fully endorsed the decision to zone the Akwa-Ibom state governorship position to Eket Senatorial Zone.
Accordingly, he said ‘’the NWC expects that only aspirants from Eket Senatorial Zone will present themselves for the governorship primary election in the state’’.
In the spirit of internal democracy, he added that the NWC promises that there would be free, fair and transparent congresses, adding that aspirants from Eket Senatorial Zone were therefore encouraged to fully participate in the process.
It would be recalled that the ceding of the Akwa Ibom governorship to Eket Senatorial zone had polarized the party in the state. With this position, The Street Journal reports that the ruling party at the centre has pitched its tent with the Governor, Godwill Akpabio who had been having a running battle with the chieftains of the party from other zones, particularly the Uyo Senatorial zone.
Most of the party bigwigs like Don Etiebet, and the immediate past Governor of the state, amongst several others had been calling for the head of the governor over the matter.
The matter however, took a dangerous dimension when Akpabio declared that those who indicated interest in the coveted seat but did not have his blessing were traitors. He however, added that they deserved to die for betraying him.
