The Federal Government has directed the Chief Judge of Adamawa to immediately swear in Mr Bala Ngilari as governor of the state, The Street Journal can report authoritatively .
The directive is contained in a statement issued by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Bello Adoke.
Adoke said that the move was in compliance with the Federal High Court judgment which nullified the swearing in of Mr Umar Fintri as Acting Governor.
The statement, according to reliable presidency sources, also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to suspend all arrangements for the scheduled governorship by-election in the state on Saturday.
“The attention of the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has been drawn to the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, delivered by Hon Justice Adeniyi Ademola on Oct. 8, 2014.
“The Federal High Court by its judgment under reference nullified the swearing in of Ahmadu Umar Fintiri as the Acting Governor of Adamawa State and declared the resignation of James Bala Ngilari as unconstitutional, null and void.
“The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed, hereby calls on the Chief Judge of Adamawa to immediately swear in Barrister Bala Ngilari as the Governor of Adamawa.
“This directive is in obedience to the judgment of the court and the need to avert a vacuum in governance and possible constitutional crises.
“The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission is also called upon in obedience to the judgement to keep in abeyance all the arrangements made for the conduct of the by-election scheduled to take place in Adamawa on Saturday, , Oct. 11, 2014,” , ” the statement said.
The presidents action, according to reliable sources, was aimed at checkmating the Acting-Governor, Fintri, from throwing the embattled state into further political logjam. Fintri had said that he would seek the Supreme Court’s review of the Federal High Court’s judgement which declared his assumption of office as Governor in acting capacity, void and null. It was gathered that the presidency resolve to abide by the outcome of today’s judgement in order to restore some semblance of peace and tranquility in the Boko Haram ravaged state.
Respondents who spoke with The Street Journal were of the opinion that the presidency’s action would help soar up president Jonathan’s approval rating amongst Nigerians. They noted that his acceptance of today’s judgement has further shown him as a true democrat.
