Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Lagos, Senator Bola Hameed Tinubu, on Friday paid separate visits to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his country home in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.
At exactly 3pm, Atiku and his entourage stormed Obasanjo’s house and went straight inside for another closed door meeting.
On the purpose of his visit, Atiku said he came to pay respect to his former boss, saying: “We discussed the state of the nation generally and thirdly, our relationship is extremely cordial. That’s what I can say.”
Speaking on the defection of former governor Olusegun Osoba from APC to SDP, Atiku said it was regrettable, adding, “It is unfortunate but I believe it is a situation that is still reconcilable.”
Atiku who earlier spoke during his visit to Governor Ibikunle Amosun, said, “the man who made this possible for me through the work of God, who has national exposure in position of leadership is also from this state, that is my former boss President Olusegun Obasanjo, so you can see the connection between me and Ogun State.”
“When the late Chief MKO Abiola won the election, everybody was expecting that I was going to be his running mate, but they did not know what God had in stock for me at another time”.
“At another period when Obasanjo became the President of our great party then, he nominated me to be his vice-president and that gave me the opportunity to serve this country at the highest level. I am greatly indebted to him and the people of this state for that opportunity.”
Atiku explained that when he drove into Abeokuta, he was impressed with the kind of physical infrastructure, that had come up in the state which was phenomenon and unbelievable.
Atiku commended his leadership, stressing “it is only fair that when such physical transformation is going on, it is only logical and reasonable that opportunity should be given to that kind of political leadership for that physical transformation to continue.”
He, however, said “you see what has always affected our developmental strides in this country, is that when we change administrations and they could not continue what their predecessors have started.
“They begin a new project and new thing, because nation building is a continuous process and therefore at a point in time, it requires continuity. It is only when continuity is achievable that we can see the kind of development that we need.”
He said Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) talked on the television that they had done this or that, but they had done nothing.
He said “if you go through the APC states, honestly, you will see, you will feel and you touch the kind of transformation that Nigerians deserve. They call themselves transformers, they call themselves progressives.
“I have visited all APC states, you will really feel, see and touch. They will tell you that they have rehabilitated railway stations and those railways are not running. That is the kind of thing PDP are good at. They are good at propaganda”.
