The All Progressives Congress (APC) has brightened its chances of having a strong foothold in Akwa Ibom state, ahead 2015, having laid hands on the former Secretary to the Government of the state, Umana Okon Umana who is on the verge of becoming a member.
Umana is set to formal declared for the APC next Thursday in Uyo, having dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following fruitful talks he had had with the leadership of the APC in both Lagos and Abuja.
He is to join the opposition party along with more than 5,000 members of PDP who have been aggrieved with the alleged lack of order in the PDP.
Reports from Akwa Ibom are indicating that stakeholders of PDP in the state are in support of Umana’s decampment from PDP following their irreconcilable differences with the leadership of the ruling party in the state.
Crises began to rock the PDP in Akwa Ibom state at the instance of the state governor, Sir Godswill Akpabio who has been insisting that his successor should emerge from the Eket Senatorial zone against the popular will of the PDP stakeholders in the state.
Akpabio has not been making pretenses about his desire to install the former Secretary to the Government of the State, Emmanuel Udom as his successor, while coercing the PDP’s executive in Akwa Ibom to tow his line in that regard.
The PDP’s resolve to feature Udom in the governorship contest of Akwa Ibom, had ruptured the peace within the party, as top members were frequently side-tracked from the mainstream of activities of the party.
The PDP officials in Akwa Ibom with the backing of the state governor had allegedly manipulated the last delegates congress in the state to favour the governor’s anointed candidate.
The governorship, Senatorial and House of Representatives members in Akwa Ibom were short-changed in the last delegates conference in the state amid a high level of treachery that went with the process.
Most of the PDP stakeholders in Akwa Ibom including the former State governor, Obong Victor Attah and the Board of Trustees members of PDP from the State, Chief Don Etiebet had made fruitless efforts to set the PDP on the path of self recovery, leaving members of the party in the state to flounder.
Umana’s decampment into APC, according to bookmakers in the state ,is expected to create a band wagon effect as more aggrieved members of the PDP are expected to join the opposition party in protest.
Already, the anti-Akpabio sentiments have started swelling up in Akwa Ibom on a general consideration that his desperation in pushing the former SSG of the state to succeed him was a ploy to make him continue the ruling of Akwa Ibom state by proxy after bowing out of office.
Umana’s declaration for APC is expected to be witnessed by national officials of the party to be led by the National Chairman, Chief Odigie Oyegun.
However, the APC’s leadership, according to reports, has promised to conduct a transparent primary election in Akwa Ibom state as a means of building confidence in its new members towards the 2015 governorship election in the state.
The former SSG has filed an application in a Federal High challenging the outcome of the delegates congress in Akwa Ibom, as the court is expected to deliver its ruling on the case before the end of the week.
