PDP Guber Primaries: Abacha Withdraws, Murtala Mohammed’s Son Loses Kano Governorship Ticket

Salihu Sagir Takai has emerged as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kano state for the 2015 general election.
Mr. Takai got 1,260 votes to beat three others including Abba Risqua, the son of late Head of State, Murtala Mohammed, who got 140 votes.
Mansu Sani and Bello Gwarzo got 126 and 106 votes respectively.

Mohammed Abacha
Mohammed Abacha, the son of ‎ another former Head of State, Sani Abacha, withdrew from the race on the eve of the election.
Mr. Takai is the preferred candidate of the Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau.
‎Mr. Takai contested the governorship seat on the platform of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, in 2011 and lost to incumbent Rabiu Kwankwaso who was the PDP candidate then.
The Street Journal recalls that president Goodluck Jonathan had a closed-door meeting with Mohammed Abacha last Friday where it was gathered that the president insisted that Abacha should step down for the Education Minister’s candidate. It was further argued that the time was not right yet for the the younger Abacha to be fully absorbed into the political family for elective position if the system must be given any semblance of credibility.
Sources close to the presidency confided in the Street Journal that Abacha agreed with the president but insisted that the agreement be wrapped in secrecy until the eve of the primaries.
