The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adamu Mu’Azu will after today, begin to take full charge of the affairs of the ruling party as delegates drawn for the National Convention of PDP at the Eagles Square, Abuja are expected to affirm his leadership.
According to plans, party delegated who have started converging in Abuja for the convention have resolved to affirm Mu’Azu as the PDP National Chairman, since he has been serving in acting capacity over the past few months that he took over. Although Mu’Azu remains the only candidate for the chairmanship slot at today’s convention, the PDP delegates will, all the same, file out to elect him specifically to update the record of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on PDP Chairmanship.
Mu’Azu has been embattled in the past few weeks following moves to remove him from office through a court order.
His headship of PDP came under heavy criticism from aggrieved members of the party who felt that since he was not elected, he therefore, has no constitutional backing to present any candidate of the party for the 2015 general election.
Mu’Azu’s opponents had argued in court that he was not fit to remain as Chairman of PDP mainly because INEC had hitherto not recognised him as Chairmanship.
Although the court last week dismissed application filed by a member of PDP seeking the removal of Mu’Azu, alleging illegality on his leadership, the party was duty bound to affirm his leadership through a properly conducted process in order to stave off future efforts to challenge him.
Against this background, delegates state by state who arrived Abuja for the National Convention have been holding meetings on the planed affirmation of Mu’Azu’s leadership at today’s convention
It waslearnt that some of the delegates had also met President Jonathan in the early hours of today at the International Conference Center, where a larger meeting of PDP took place to preview today’s scheduled event.
