This is certainly not the best of time for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as over 5000 campaign groups registered under the Prof. Rufai Alkali-led Goodluck Support Groups (GSG) have expressed displeasure over their alleged neglect due to what they described as “vested interest of the leadership.”
The group in a communiqué issued at the end of its 5th executive meeting, signed by Coordinators of Pro- Goodluck Support Groups, Mr. Solomon Akaya JP, Hon Kingsley Oriaku, Dr Abubarka Aminu and Mrs. Chinyere Omeje, expressed disappointment on the neglect members have been suffering notwithstanding working hard to sustain the momentum for Jonathan’s campaign.
It said, “it is of great concern to note that the groups that have worked so hard to mobilize the grassroots for the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan have nothing to show for it all these years owing to vested personal interest of the leadership of GSG, Prof Alkali and Prof Nick Ezeh.”
The groups called on President Goodluck Jonathan to “Wade into crisis as a matter of urgency to direct the leadership of GSG to involve/mobilize the entire groups to participate fully in the ongoing campaigns of President Jonathan and subsequently mobilize the groups to the grassroots for the presidential, governorship, national and state assembly elections.”
The groups which said they were foot soldiers of Jonathan’s re-election bid noted that they were speaking from the psyche of the electorate and cautioned that the president should not allow himself to be deceived by campaigns on television and social media campaigns alone.
The communiqué further stated that since the inception of Alkali’s leadership, the groups under the GSG have not been fairly treated as they were abandoned at the president’s declaration at Eagles Square after they had traveled round the country.
It stated: “Mr. President, Sir, we want to bring it to your knowledge that the leadership of GSG under Prof. Alkali and Prof. Nick Ezeh are not working for your interest in your re-election bid. We are therefore calling on Mr. President to intervene as a matter of urgency as time is of great essence in this matter.
Our reporter gathered that over 8000 groups registered by the Alkali led Goodluck Support Groups paid the sum of N200, 000 each to obtain nomination form for the president.
According to our source, the aggrieved members of the GSG were piqued over exclusion from the President’s campaign organization.
