Rivers State commissioner of agriculture, Mr Emma Chindah, Tuesday confirmed the outbreak of bird flu in a private poultry in Port Harcourt. He also said hundreds of birds infected by the out break have been killed.
Chindah, who spoke to journalist in Port Harcourt Tuesday, said the affected farm has been quarantined and decontaminated, just as he said no human being was infected by the influenza.
He said “on Jan, 14th we got a report from a farm that was wearisome. The report we got suggest that the farm may have been infected by highly pathogenic avian influenza”.
He confirmed that samples of the flu were taken to the veterinary research institute in Vom, Plateau State.
According to him “the result came out on Jan 17 and it read positive of highly pathogenic avian influenza. On the basis of that, we had to take necessary steps”.
