Stock Market Opens 2015 Bearish With 2.06% Loss

Profit taking continued on the Nigerian Bourse today- Monday January 5th 2015, as the market closed negative due to negative performance of the consumer goods sector, insurance sector and banking sector, leaving the oil and gas sector standing positive. Trading activities slowed in volume as 299.41 million shares worth N5.46 billion in 3,803 deals exchanged hands today. This is a decline from the 233.76 million shares worth N6.99 billion in 2,775 trades carried out on Wednesday. It is instructive to note that the value and volume of transactions increased with ETI, GT Bank and zenith bank topping in value terms, while ETI and GT Bank topped in value.

The All Share Index (NSEASI) closed negative with 2.06% decrease to 33,943.29 from 34,657.15 the previous trading day. Market Capitalization declined in tandem to N11.24 trillion from N11.48 trillion the prior trading day. The BGL 50 Index also closed negative with 2.22% decline to close at 144.95 from 148.23 the previous trading day. Its market capitalization also slowed to N10.49 trillion from N10.73 trillion the previous trading day.

Market breath closed negative with 16 gainers and 28 losers out of a total of 61 stocks that were active today RT Briscoe Plc. with a gain of 9.00% to close at N0.84per share. It was followed by Oando Plc. with a gain of 8.63% to close at N17.50 per share. Others on the gainers’ list include; UACN Prop, Chapions and Total Nigeria Plc. On the decliners’ list, Seplat Plc led with a loss of 5.26% to close at N351.50 per share. It was followed by GSK Plc. with a loss of 5.18% to close at N47.41 per share. Others on the decliners’ list are; Dangote Cement Plc. Julius Berger Nig. Plc. and Ashaka Cem Plc.

Atop the BGL 50 Index gainers’ list is Oando Plc. with a gain of 8.63% to close at N17.50 per share. It was followed by UACN Prop Plc. with a gain of 4.95% to close at N9.97 per share. Others on the gainers’ list include; Total Nigeria Plc. National Salt Co. Nig. Plc. and Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc. On the decliners’ list, Seplat Plc led with a loss of 5.26% to close at N351.50 per share. It was followed by GSK Plc. with a loss of 5.18% to close at N47.41 per share. Others on the decliners’ list are; Dangote Cement Plc. Julius Berger Nig. Plc. and Ashaka Cem Plc.
