Rivers State governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, escaped death on Thursday when hoodlums attacked his convoy in Rumuolumeni community in Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers State.
Obio/Akpor is the hometown of the former minister of state for education and governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Chief Nyesom Wike.
Two supporters of the APC in Rumuolumeni community were reportedly injured during the attack on the convoy of Amaechi, who was on a door-to-door campaign for the party ahead of tomorrow’s presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.
Reports said the chieftains of the APC who were in the governor’s convoy during the attack included the former chief of staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, and the party’s candidate for Obio/Akpor Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Tony Okocha.
Also in the convoy was the APC candidate for Rivers East Senatorial District, Chief Andrew Uchendu, as well as two former chairmen of Obio/Akpor local government council, Hon Chikodi Dike and Dr Lawrence Chuku.
The chief press secretary to the governor, Mr David Iyofor, in an SMS wrote; “This evening, gunshots were fired at Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi in Rumuolumeni, Obio Akpor, by PDP thugs.
“Obio Akpor is the home of PDP Rivers’ guber candidate Nyesom Wike.
