The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Kaduna State, has announced the appointment of Prof. Ibrahim Garba as the university’s new Vice-Chancellor.
Mr Muhammad Dewu, the chairman of the university’s Governing Council, who announced this to newsmen on Tuesday, said Garba was appointed following “a rigorous and transparent selection process’’.
He said that after a two-day interview conducted by a panel set up by the council, Garba came first out of the 24 other professors who vied for the post.
The new VC takes over the affairs of the university in May when the tenure of the incumbent, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, will end.
Garba, a professor of Geology, was born on Feb. 25, 1957 in Riruwai, Doguwa Local Government Area of Kano State, and bagged a BSc. Geology in 1980; M.Sc. Mineral Exploration in 1985 at ABU; Ph.D Geology at the University of London in 1993.
He also obtained a Diploma in Mineral Studies at the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London, in 1992.
The new VC who takes over from the incumbent, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, in May when his tenure ends, is currently an Adviser to the Republic of Guinea, supervising the implementation of the country’s mining sector reforms.
Garba is also a former Director-General, Nigeria Mining Cadastral Office, Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Abuja.
