Buhari’s Election, Victory For All Nigerian Opposition Parties, Says HDP

The Hope Democratic Party (HDP) has said that the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, in the March 28 presidential elections, was a victory for all opposition parties in Nigeria.

HDP stated this in a statement issued in Abuja by its National Publicity, Mr Usman Sani, sent to TheStreetJournal on Friday.

It also said that it considered APC’s victory, by and large, a victory and triumph for democracy, as the new development was also in accord with HDP’s quest for a new Nigeria.

It said: “The declaration by INEC of the presidential candidate of the APC as winner of the March 28th 2015 presidential election, is viewed by us as a well-deserved victory, not only for the General and his party, APC, but for all the opposition parties and all Nigerians.

“Above all, we consider it a victory and triumph for democracy as it is in accord with our quest for a new Nigeria.’’

According to the statement, HDP is elated by the decision of the candidate of the ruling party, PDP, President Goodluck Jonathan, to congratulate the winner, Buhari, ahead of INEC’s official declaration.

“It is a gesture we consider as exemplary, mature and unprecedented in our long, hard march to true democracy,’’ the party said.

It also said that Nigerians appeared to have regained their constitutional powers and rights to elect leaders of their choice.

“They are entitled to better and better deals at every turn of election to make a choice for their welfare and security at every election to secure the future of this country.’’

It further said that the party was very hopeful that Buhari’s persistent campaign message of an anti-corruption crusade, if elected, would embolden HDP to continue to drive home its message of welfarism and wealth re-distribution.

The party also congratulated all Nigerians for their peaceful conduct during the “eventful presidential election.’’
