The Kano State Resident Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Alhaji Minkaila Abdullahi, his wife and two daughters on Friday died in a residential fire disaster.
The four family members: Mikaila, his wife, Zulaiha; and two daughters, Aisha and Asmau all died in the early hours of Friday following an outbreak of fire in the commissioner’s official residence on Kashim Road, Nasarawa GRA, Kano.
Alhaji Lawal Garba, INEC Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Kano State, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, said the deceased INEC boss and his family are already slated for burial in his hometown, Gantsa, Jigawa State, later on Friday.
Mr Magaji Majiya, an Assistant Superintendent of Police and spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, confirmed the incident.
He said the fire was suspected to have been caused by a spark in the family’s generator at about 4 a.m. on Friday.
According to him, the family members were killed when they tried to escape through the window of their apartment.
Also confirming the incident, the State Director of Fire Service, Alhaji Balarabe Kabara, said his men received distress call from the neighbours of the deceased around 4.30 am on Friday.
Neighbours of the deceased family members said they noticed the inferno at dawn but were helpless as the fire had consumed half of the building already, so they called in the fire service.
