President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the appointment of Justice Amiru Sanusi as a new Justice of the Supreme Court following his recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC).
Mr Soji Oye, NJC’s Acting Director of Information, announced the appointment in statement he signed and issued on Tuesday evening, made available to newsmen.
According to the statement, Sanusi will be sworn-in by the NJC Chairman, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, on Thursday, May, 15, 2015 in the Supreme Court Complex.
Justice Sanusi was until his elevation to the apex court a Justice of the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
The President had in compliance with the provisions of Section 231 (2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, nominated Sanusi in March and forwarded his name to the National Assembly in March for ratification.
Sanusi’s appointment now raises the number of Nigeria’s Supreme Court justices to 18.
