A 27-year-old trader, Chidi Ibiam, was on Thursday sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by an Ikeja High Court, for defiling a six-year-old girl.
Delivering judgment, Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya, the trial judge, held that Ibiam was guilty of the charge of defilement of a minor filed against him.
“I have noted before me all the relevant facts of this case; the defendant is hereby found guilty of the crime of defilement and is, hereby, sentenced to 21 years in prison,” Ogunsanya ordered.
Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State states thus: “Any person who has unlawful sexual intercourse with a child is guilty of a felony and liable to imprisonment for life.’’
Earlier at the convict’s trial, the prosecution, led by Mr Adebayo Haroun, a state counsel, had said that Ibiam, a resident of Baruwa Area of Ipaja, Lagos, committed the offence on Dec. 15, 2012.Ibiam.
Haroun said that the convict was caught after the victim reported the assault to her mother.
He told the court that the convict was well-known to the victim’s family and was also their neighbour and a church member.
Also, the victim whose name is withheld because she is a minor, had testified at the trial that the defendant had unlawful carnal knowledge of her.
She vividly recalled that the convict sexually defiled her on 12 different occasions in a shop and in a neighbour’s house.
“He used to give me garri and money, then he would ask me to sit on his laps before he would start touching me,” she said.
She also referred to Ibiam’s genitals as “tom tom” throughout her testimony.
Also testifying, Dr Adefunke Adeoye of Orile-Agege General Hospital, said that when she conducted a vaginal examination on the victim, she found evidence of sexual assault and a broken hymen.
