A Kano State Upper Sharia Court in Rijiyar Lemo, has sentenced a man and a woman, Abdul-Inyas and Hajiya Mairo, respectively, to death for blaspheming against the Holy Islamic Prophet Mohammed.
According to a statement signed and issued in Kano by Mallam Nasiru of the Kano State Sharia Court of Appeal, obtained by the Street Journal in the early hours of Friday, the convicts committed the offence this month.
It said they were found to have contravened the provisions of Section 110 and Section 382(b) of the Sharia Penal Court Law, 2000.
“They are hereby sentenced to death,” the statement quoted part of the judgment of the court.
It further added that the court had freed four other men who were arrested alongside the two convicted persons but were later found not guilty.
It gave the names of the discharged and acquitted men as: Alkasim Abubakar, Yahya Abubakar, Isa Abubakar, and Abdullahi Abubakar.
The statement also stated that it was aware that some Muslim faithful in Kano were threatening to commit acts of violence if the convicts were set free.
