Ahead of next week’s inauguration of the two chambers of the National Assembly, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is to hold a crucial meeting with Senators-elect and members-elect of the House of Representatives in Abuja on Thursday.
Mr Lai Mohammed, APC National Publicity Secretary, stated this in a statement issued and obtained by the Street Journal in Abuja on Tuesday.
It said that the meeting was principally scheduled to seek a truce among the various contenders for the various positions and stop acrimony in the selection of principal officers for the Senate and the House of Representatives in a way that party supremacy would be upheld.
The party “will hold a crucial meeting with all its Senators-elect and House of Representatives members-elect on Thursday, June 4, at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.,’’ the statement said in part.
Mohammed further explained that it would meet with its Senators-elect at 10am while the meeting with its elected members of the House of Representatives was scheduled for 2pm on the same day at the same venue.
It would be recalled that since APC won majority seats in the National Assembly elections held on March 28 this year, the tussle over who gets what position in the 8th Assembly had generated a serious controversy among geo-political zones and aspiring lawmakers.
For the Senate Presidency, Senators Bukola Saraki, George Akume and Ahmed Lawan have been at daggers drawn, while Reps Yakubu Dogara and Femi Gbajamila are eyeing the Reps Speaker position.
