The once crisis-ridden National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Oyo state is shedding its notorious toga for more positive purposes as it donated 40 cars to branch chapters of the union on Thursday.
Before now, guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons were procured with the union’s daily income and distributed to motor parks to unleash violence on rival union members and hapless citizens alike.
Scores of innocent citizens of the state and visitors have been killed, a development that peaked in 2011 with the killing of a medical student of Ahmadu Bello University at Iwo road motor park.
The Chairman, Taofeek Oyerinde (a.k.a. Fele) said that such were the happenings of the past regimes, but that the union was borrowing a leaf from other organised associations in the state to truly impact positively on the welfare of members.
