Fraudsters have created phony accounts on Facebook in the name of Dr Emmanuel Kachikwu, the newly appointed Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to defraud unsuspecting members of the public, the corporation has said.
NNPC Group General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr Ohi Alegbe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.
Alegbe alleged that the fraudsters were using the said account to send various scam letters, phantom contract deals and solicit for cash from highly placed contacts within and outside Nigeria.
He, therefore, advised members of the public to disregard any such Facebook page purportedly belonging to the GMD of NNPC as he does not operate any Facebook account.
The statement reads: “The Management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has drawn the attention of members of the public, especially stakeholders in the global oil and gas industry to the existence of a spurious Facebook account purportedly belonging to its newly appointed Group Managing Director, Emmanuel Kachikwu.
“The NNPC noted that the said Facebook account, which bears the photograph and name of the GMD is the creation of some nondescript internet fraudsters bent on exploiting the personae and office of the new GMD to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
“While we explore all options to arrest this menace, we wish to advise members of the public to disregard any such FB page purportedly belonging to the GMD of NNPC as he does not operate any Facebook account.’’
It would be recalled that Kachikwu was appointed barely a week ago, precisely on Aug. 4, by President Muhammadu Buhari, to replace Joseph Dahwa, who was appointed by his immediate predecessor, President Goodluck Jonathan.
