Gov. Lalong Appoints Ex-INEC Chairman, Jega, As Plateau University Pro-Chancellor

Plateau State Governor, Rt. Hon. Simon Lalong, has approved the appointment of Prof. Attahiru Jega, the immediate past National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as the Pro-Chancellor of the state university.

The Governor also approved the immediate reinstatement of the former Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Danjuma Sheni, who was sacked by ex-governor Jonah Jang, his predecessor.

Sheni replaces Prof. Stephen Mallo, who was appointed by Jang, as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the university.

A statement issued in Jos on Friday by the Governor’s Director of Press Affairs, Mr Emmanuel Nanle, said the appointments took immediate effect from August 14.

It reads in part: “As part of his efforts to address the protracted challenges facing Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, and to reposition it for better productivity, the state Governor, Mr Simon Lalong, has approved the reconstitution of the new Governing Council for the institution, with Professor Attahiru Jega appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the university.’’

Other members of the university council appointed include: Chief Samuel Mafuyai, Prof. Rahila Gowon, Chief James Barry, Chief Musa Izam (Northern Zone), Prof. Sebastian Maimako, Mr Zingfa Galam (Southern Zone), and a representative of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

It said Lalong also reaffirmed the appointment of the pioneer and current Chancellor of the university, the Soun of Ogbomosho Land, Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi Ajegundade.

The statement added that the changes were aimed at repositioning the institution which has been renamed Solomon Lar University, Bokkos, after the state’s first civilian governor,for effective educational training and research in line with international best practices.
