Al-Makura To FG: Expand Abuja-Keffi Highway To Ease Gridlock

Nasarawa State Governor, Alhaji Umaru Al-Makura on Sunday appealed to the Federal Government to immediately expand the Abuja- Keffi highway to five lanes and walkways in order to ease traffic congestion on the road.
The Governor, who made the appeal while inspecting facilities along the road, said that the expansion would ease out the gridlock usually experienced on the road and save the daily loss of man hours usually experienced by commuters due to heavy traffic congestion on the highway.

According to Al-Makura, the hardship that commuters experience on the highway has become so unbearable that the Federal Government has to urgently expand the highway and ameliorate the plight of commuters.

The Governor disclosed that, as a mark of the state government’s commitment towards the realization of this objective, it would soon open discussion with the Federal Government with a view to fast-tracking the expansion of the road from its current 30 metres width to five lanes immediately.

He said that his administration had set up a task force and positioned every 100 meters along the road, with the aim of curbing the indiscriminate dumping of refuse by residents on the highway.

The Governor, therefore, appealed to residents to support the task force, which is mandated to prosecute people who dump refuse on the highway, to serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders and safeguard the people’s health through proper environmental sanitation.

The Street Journal reports that the Abuja-Keffi highway has increasingly become a nightmare for travellers over the years owing to the agonizing traffic gridlock which motorists go through daily.
