President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former military leader, Yakubu Gowon, and former interim president, Ernest Shonekan, were among the dignitaries that attended Wednesday’s funeral of the late Mrs HID Awolowo, wife of the late sage and iconic politician, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, at Ikenne, Ogun State.
The deceased matriarch of the Awolowo family clan, who had died peacefully in Ikenne in September, two months to her 100th birthday, was buried beside her husband’s tomb, at the family compound after a church service held at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, with no fewer than 35 Bishops and other clerics in attendance.
Top dignitaries who graced the occasion included the Senate president, Dr Bukola Saraki, General Oladipo Diya, Lateef Jakande, Gbenga Daniel, Femi Okunrounmu, Bola Tinubu, Ayo Adebanjo,Segun Mimiko, Alaba Lawson,Femi Okunrounmu, and Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.
Business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, former Ogun State Governor, Chief Segun Osoba, former Ekiti State Governor, Chief Niyi Adebayo, Governors Adams Oshiomole, Rochas Okorocha, Rauf Aregbesola and Abiola Ajimobi, and ex-SGF, Chief Olu Falae, among many others, were among the long list of top personalities who went to pay their last respect to the late matriarch.
Residents of Ikenne lined up the streets to bid the woman fondly described by her late husband as his ”Jewel of inestimable value” farewell as her body was taken to and from the church to the Efunnyela Hall reception venue.
