The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has fixed January 9, 2016, for the conduct of the Supplementary Bayelsa Governorship Poll in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, which was cancelled during the election held on December 5, due to electoral violence.
Mr Nick Dazang, INEC Deputy Director, Voter Education, who stated this in an interview, said all political parties that fielded candidates in the inconclusive poll had already been put on notice.
The Street Journal recalls that INEC had declared the election inconclusive in a contest that was clearly between Bayelsa’s incumbent Governor Seriake Dickson of the PDP and former Governor Timipre Sylva of the APC.
According to the initial results announced, Dickson won in six out of the seven local governments, in which the election was conducted with 105, 748 votes, while while Sylva won in only Brass LGA with 72,594 votes.
The outstanding Southern Ijaw has a registered voting population of 120,827 voters.
Bayelsa, the home state of Nigeria’s immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan, is a PDP stronghold.
Dickson, who is seeking a second and final term in office, had beaten the then incumbent Governor Sylva to supplant him as Governor of the state.
