$2.1bn Arms Deal A Scam, Says Fayose

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has said that the alleged $2.1bn arms purchase fraud involving the immediate past National Security Adviser, NSA, Colonel Sambo Dasuki rtd, in which a horde of officials of the past administration have been arrested and are facing prosecution, is a mere scam orchestrated by the Buhari administration.

Fayose, who is of the opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP, also took a swipe at Buhari’s order for the probing of ex-service chiefs including no fewer than 18 serving generals by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over their alleged involvement in the arms deal.

The Governor in a statement issued by his spokesman, Mr Lere Olayinka, said it was strange for serving military generals to be interrogated by junior police officers in the EFCC, stressing that the military officers ought to have been probed in accordance with the armed forces rules of engagement.

The statement reads: “The $2.1 billion arms deal is a scam because all that they are just doing is to brandish figures to deceive Nigerians and demonize the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and those opposed to his dictatorship in the All Progressive Congress (APC). Till today, the amount they have charged people for stealing is not up to N10 billion and the $2.1 billion they claimed was stolen is about N600 billion.

“The president must let Nigerians see where the arms deal is in the 2015 Budget and publish details of the imaginary $2.1 billion scam. Also, the President must tell Nigerians how his friend, Jafaru Isa, was able to return N100 million to the EFCC within three days because there are insinuations that the N100 million refunded came from the Presidency.

“Even though I am not a military officer, but I know that there is what is called orderly room trial or court martial, which military men who erred in the performance of their duties are made to go through. It is until they are found guilty and probably dismissed that they are made to face court trial.

“In this case, how does it feel for a serving military general to be interrogated by an assistant commissioner of police (ACP)?

“I think we should not destroy our democratic institutions, especially the judiciary and the armed forces because we are fighting corruption.

“Already, the president has ridiculed the judiciary by disobeying the courts and coming on television to say that orders of the court do not hold waters.

“He is also destroying the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by turning it to commission for inconclusive elections. He should not ridicule the military, and men of goodwill should advise the president to thread cautiously.

“Also, the international community, especially the United States, United Kingdom and the United Nations should caution the president against actions capable of bringing down institutions of government under the guise of fighting corruption.”

It is unfortunate that many are against ongoing Fight Against Corruption because they are involved. Many of them are just against it because they know very well that endemic diseases of Corruption which is more pronounced in public service has been benefiting them directly or indirectly for so long a time. The comment of Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state on the probing of $2.1 billion arms deal as a scam is not a surprise to anybody who knows where the was coming from.

But the position of Fayose on the arms deal is unfortunate in that it shows that some people because of political differences will loose their sights and go down so low in appreciating fraudulent practices and indecency. How can a Governor of an enlighten State of Ekiti with much tradition of intelligence and integrity will be telling public that it is an orchestration of President Buhari?

It could have been better for the crude Governor to keep mute than commenting on such shady deals that former President Jonathan is seriously disturbed and regretting. Perhaps Fayose is not aware that Goodluck Jonathan is who every beneficiary is pointing to as the sole authority of the disbursements.

There are many people who should have been brought down by thunder strikes that are still celebrating in our land. With much respect of Ekiti long old traditions and integrity which is also in line with Yoruba tradition Fayose should have been striped of his post if it is governorship position is a traditional title. “Oun to yeni lo yeni, okun orun ko ye adiye” What is different from a thief and people encouraging and protecting him?

Fayose wants to be recognised as main opposition in the West which no one is against. However, Fayose is expected to be more reasonable and upright to call spade its normal name than to be supporting illegality and promoting fraudulent activities in our country.

Perhaps Fayoye is not aware that everyone arrested by EFCC has confirmed benefiting from the $2.1 billion arms deal. Everybody is now saying that Mr. President(Jonathan) approved it.

Perhaps Fayose was out of the country when Boko Haram kidnapped over 200 secondary school girls at Chibok then. Mr. former President Jonathan did not have any passion for the incident then and went to Kano for political rally that he thought was more important than the lives of over 200 Chibok girls. What could have happened if Mr. Goodluck Jonathan or Zambo Dasuki daughters were among the Chibok girls kidnapped and president now discovered that the money he approved for fighting enemies of their children were diverted?

Fayose as a father of Children kidnapped by Boko Haram, husband of a religious wife whose children were kidnapped, and brother of a wife of soldier who is now widow because the husband was ill-equipped and eventually killed by Boko Haram, and brother of a death a soldier kill by Boko Haram should tell us how he will feel and respond to the personal feelings emanating from disaster and looting of arms deal.

Fayose should also be remembered that PDP as a Party is supposed to be proscribed for diverting the security money of the Federation to personal use of campaigning for the two and half term coming of Goodluck Jonathan when other 50 political parties were struggling for survival. It made the Pre-Election preparations unfair and unbalanced. The PDP team empowered all the obnoxious militants in the geographical zones by given them part of the arms fund to pursue Party Presidential campaign. PDP team should not be trusted and the party should be proscribed as deterrent for whoever is planning similar madness in future. Olu Falae’s confession that money given to him from the $1.2b was his Party( Social Democratic Party) not to present a candidate but support Jonathan re-election is enough to open Fayose’s eye from slumber that the fish is out of water

Fayose and his media assistant should be thanking God that he is alive to witness this cleaning that is going on. He needs to know that politicians life is not forever as those people that are saying hosanna now because they are benefiting illegally from you will disown in the nearest future. You hear how Edwin Clark described Goodluck Jonathan as a President without the capacity to fight corruption.

It is high time Fayose faces the reality of life and be a progressive opposition and be a man of today and future integrity.
