Stakeholders Wary of Gombe January 27 Rerun Elections

Stakeholders in the January 27 rerun elections in Gombe State are wary that four days to the exercise, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to to display names of the candidates.
Although, the Administrative Secretary of INEC, Gombe State, Gregory Tarkumbor, had told stakeholders at a meeting in Gombe that the election would hold as planned on Wednesday 27, however, INEC is yet to send the approval for those that are supposed to contest.
In their separate reactions, the political parties condemned the attitude of INEC over the non release of candidates’ names four days before the re-run election.
Chairman Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) Malam Abdulhamid Sadiq, said that the commission was not serious with the elections by not releasing the names of those who are suppose to contest for the seats.
Sadiq said, “we have been bearing with the commission for long up to now, the commission did not know who is going to contest, I don’t think that the commission is serious”, .
Magaji Kwairanga, Chairman Alliance for Democracy (AD) said that without the political parties, INEC would have not existed. He said the list would enable the candidate to go out for their campaigns and the voters would know whom to vote for before the election Day.
The INEC Administrative Secretary however, said: “when everything is ready, they (INEC, Abuja office), would send it through email for the announcement. Please exercise patience as the commission is doing everything possible to ensure smooth conduct of the election.”
He assured that the list would be ready before the election day.
The rerun elections have been shifted thrice.
The re-run elections are into Akko Federal Constituency and Akko North State Assembly.
INEC had, at different times, fixed January 19 and January 23, 2016 before its latest decision – January 27.
Appeal Court has fixed a 90-day deadline judgments for a rerun, after nullifing the elections of two All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates, whose elections were challenged by the two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates.
