Former Senate President Cries out: My life Under Threat

Ahead Benue South Senatorial rerun election, February 20, 2016, former Senate President, David Mark, on Monday cried out that his life was under threat.

This he disclosed in a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase.

He is alleging that politicians in the state who are major players in the forthcoming rerun election in the Benue South Senatorial District, have concluded plans to assassinate him, ahead the rerun election this weekend.

He is pointing accusing finger at three top members of the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, accusing them of hiring cultists to carry dastardly acts in Benue South and in the process target him (Mark) for elimination.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Paul Mumeh, explained that “credible sources listed the cultists hired for the assassination to include the notorious supreme Vikings Squad from Jos, Plateau State and the dreaded Black Axe in Makurdi , Benue State.”

The statement noted that Mark’s petition to the IGP signed by his counsel Mr. Ken Ikonne, named a person as the arrow head of the plot.

In the petition, Ikonne told the IGP that it was obvious that a particular individual knows more about the assassination plot than he has made people to believe.

The petition, according to the statement reads, “Our client has therefore instructed us to petition you (IGP) to as a matter of urgency apprehend and interrogate (Ogenyi) to throw more light on the details of this grave assassination plot before he and his associates carry out the dastardly plot.

“Only yesterday (Sunday), Police said to be attached to (the State Deputy Governor, Benson Abounu,) fired several gun shots into the family house of Senator Mark in Otukpo.

“No reason was given for the unprovoked attack and no arrest has been made. A couple of weeks ago, (Benue State chairman of the APC Mr. Abbah Yaro) was quoted as saying if Senator Mark wants, let him win the election in seven out of the nine local government areas but no returning officer born of a woman will dare declare him.”

The statement added that the PDP Chairman in the state, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, had petitioned the Benue Command of the Nigeria Police over the unhealthy political activities of APC in the state ahead of the election and asked the authorities to prevail on members of the party to allow peace to reign.

Mark three times member of the Senate on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is fighting to return after his election was nullified by Court of Appeal November 28, 2015.

The Federal Court of Appeal sitting in Makurdi had nullified the March re-election of Senator Mark and ordered a fresh poll within 90 days.

The court handed down the verdict in the appeal filed by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, Daniel Onjeh.

Onjeh had approached the appellate court on October 20, 2015, after the election tribunal dismissed his case against Mark, a former President of the Senate.

Onjeh claimed that the election was marred by violence and rigging.

He alleged that INEC officials were compromised and voters financially induced by PDP agents at the various polling units in the district.

The petitioner also alleged that accreditation of voters was not properly done, card readers were not used and accreditation did not take place in some polling units.

But the tribunal, led by Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu  dismissed the case in its entirety for want of proofs.

In the judgment delivered on Oct 7, 2015 Dipeolu dismissed the petition on the ground that the petitioner failed to discharge the burden of proof placed on him by law.

However, Onjeh in his appeal contended that the tribunal failed to consider and make necessary findings of fact on all the vital issues raised in the petition.
