Leadership crisis is rocking the Edo Sate branch of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) following the purported removal of the Chairman of the branch, Princess Patience Iyomon by the national body led by Austin Alegeh.
A letter was allegedly sent by the national General Secretary of the NBA, Mazi Afam Osigwe, directing, Vice Chairman of the NBA Benin branch, Emmanuel Ojekhua to take over chairmanship and management of the branch including its bank accounts and properties.
The letter dated February 20, 2016 said Iyomon was removed by the National Executive Committee of the NBA at its meeting in Jos, Plateau State.
However, the state branch argured that the national President lacks such power to sack state Chairman and vowed not to allow such illegality to hold.
The embriglo got messier when The Vice Chairman, in an attempt to control the secretariat, was alleged to have led others to change the padlock and keys leading to the secretariat.
But in jiffy, the Chairman also gathered her supporters to broke into the secretariat and held an enlarged congress at the instance of Elders of the branch.
At the end of the meeting presided over by Barr. Nosa Peter Osifo, they dissociated themselves from the Jos meeting and expressed confidence in the leadership of the disposed Chairman.
They said the national NBA NEC lacks the constitutional powers to remove an elected Chairman of a branch.
For their role in the saga, five members of the Benin branch executive, who include Public Relation Officer, Ebosele Ohifoh, Vice Chairman, Emmanuel Ojekhua, Secretary, David Maduku, Treasurer, J.J Osadiaye and Pearl Agbale, were suspended by the congress.
Elder Osifo said at the end of the congress, “We see the Jos resolution as an affront and an attempt to ridicule Benin branch. We will not allow it. We are not timid.
“We shall resist any despotic attempt in NBA. The NBA President is from here. He should not annoy us. If he did, we will expel him from this branch because we will not allow him to spoil our future chances”, Osifo summed.
