Unknown gunmen have kidnapped Hajiya Hauwa-Belli Manu, the mother of the Deputy Governor of Taraba State, Haruna Manu.
Police Public Relations Officer of the Taraba State Command, Joseph Kwaji, confirmed the eport.
She was kidnapped at her residence in Bakin Kasuwa area of Mutum Biyu town, some 70 kilometers from Jalingo, the state capital.
It was gathered that the kidnappers numbering about ten also killed a middle aged man at the front of the Deputy Governor’s family house before taking his mother away.
The heavily armed gunmen, according an eye witness, came on three motorcycles, forcefully entered the house and whisked Madam Manu away. “One of the abductors fell down while they were trying to escape as the Deputy Governor’s neighbour rushed to the scene only to be shot at by the gunman on the ground.”
Kwaji said the whereabouts of the woman was not yet known because the abductors were yet to communicate with anybody.
He said the command had deployed additional detectives in the area to assist in tracking the culprits.
Kwaji therefore called on members of the public with useful information to contact the nearest police station and present same.
Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Tukura Bashir, also confirmed the incident and said there was no communication from the abductors as of the time of filing this report.
He said one person was killed as the gunmen shot continuously to pave the way for their escape with the old woman.
