To Avoid Contempt Charge, Edo Speaker Swears in Opposition Member, Eruaga

In an attempt to avoid being jailed for contempt of court, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon Victor Edoror, hurriedly on Tuesday, sworn in PDP member representing Estako II Constituency, Sylvanus Eruaga. Governor Adams Oshiomhole is from the same constituency.
The Court of Appeal had in December last year upheld the ruling of the lower tribunal which sacked Yakubu Gowon of the All Progressives Congress.
But all entreaties to the Speaker to swear him in failed, alleging forgery of Certificate of Return issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Eruaga had gone back to Justice Kayode Bada to complain of the turn of event, making the Judge on Monday summoned Speaker Edoror to appear before the appellate court within 72 hours to explain why he should not be jailed for contempt of court.
Performing the swearing-in ceremony attended by chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party, Speaker Edoror stated that lawmakers must obey the laws of the land.
Eruaga, who obviously was elated, described the oath taking as victory for democracy..He praised the judiciary for delivering justice.
