BEDC Develops Calculator to Read Meters

Authorities of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), Wednesday, announced that a min-bill calculator developed for calculating electricity consumption to avoid under estimation or over estimation of bill meant for the customers.

The Managing Director of the company, Mrs. Funke Osibodu, announced this in Benin at an interactive session with journalists.

She attributed the present generation of 1,175 mega watts throughout the country as against the 3000 mega watts that was previously generated to the vandalization of facilities by unknown people.

“BEDC is the only distribution company that is involved in power sharing even though it is not involved in power generation, so, it is whatever that is allocated to us that we share among the four states,” Mrs. Osibodu said.‎

She explained that for the country to have steady power supply, it needed to generate over 8, 500 mega watts, adding that of the 1,175 mega watts currently generated, BEDC was only allocated 129 mega watts to  service the four states namely Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti under its control.

“The problem of electricity supply in the country today is due to the vandalization of facilities by vandals. This has reduced electricity generation from 3000 mega watts to 1,175 mega watts. Nigeria needs over 8,500 mega watts to be able to have steady power supply but what is generated today is below that due to vandalization of power installations by vandals.

“BEDC needs over 1,200 mega watts to provide steady power supply to the four states under its control but what was allocated to us as at today is 129 mega watts, a drop from the 159 mega watts that was previously given to us,” she said.

Osibodu who advised customers to report anyone seen climbing BEDC poles without adequate identification to the police, disclosed that the company staff could be identified easily through their clothing and code numbers.
