President Muhammadu Buhari’s planned working visit to Rivers State to kick start the cleanup of Ogoni land, may have been cancelled at the last minute.
He was to visit Ogoniland, polluted by years of oil exploration and production, and flag off the clean up, which was expected to clean the land of years of pollution.
The clean up of the heavily polluted Ogoni land was recommended by the United Nation Environmental Programme, in its report in 2011.
There are indications that he may not make the trip on Thursday because as of the time of filing this report, the President has not left Abuja.
A source within the Villa had said that the President’s Spokesman, “Femi Adesina will issue a statement shortly.”
It is not yet known if the President’s inability to make the trip is connected to the threat by the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).
The militant had threatened on Wednesday to kill the President if he stepped his feet on Nger Delta land. “He should first signs his death warrant, if he decides to come to Niger Delta.
“We are starting a dance he cannot finish. We shall dance like vultures. He [Buhari] has dared to wake a sleeping lion, but I promise him this time around if he tries to step his foot in any community of the Niger Delt, he will not go back alive.
“Any Niger Deltan who will try to walk with Buhari shall also go to his grave that day. This is our assurance”, a member of NDA purportedly said on Wednesday.
