Edo State House Speaker, Mrs Elizabeth Ativie has said she would ensure the passage of gender equality bill in the State House of Assembly during her speakership.
She made this promise when a non governmental organization, The Gender Focus, paid her a courtesy visit in her office, Thursday.
She thanked them for coming to felicitate with her as the first female Speaker in the state House of Assembly and promised that she will not derail in her assignment.
She promised that the gender bill will be passed in her tenure as long as she remains Speaker, adding that she will ensure that th House passes quality laws that will have direct impact on the generality of Edo people.
She assured women that she will not disappoint them.
Ativie enjoined the women to stand solidly behind her in prayers and give the necessary support as her emergence as Speaker is a blessing to all of them in the state, saying she will promote women empowerment.
Earlier, President Forum for Nigeria Women in Politics (FONWIP), Hon. (Mrs.) Florence Igbinigie, had called on the Speaker to assist in the passage of the bill on gender equality.
She said that they came under the umbrella body of The Gender Focus, which consists of other several bodies to solicit for the quick passage of the law on gender equality that has been abandoned over the years.
Igbinigie commended the lawmakers who made it possible to have a female Speaker in Edo even the first of its kind in the state.
According to her they are happy and they will continue to support the legislators when the need arises.
She noted that they were aware of how the Speaker fought for “Child Right Bill” which has come into law and hopefully the gender equality bill will also see the light of the day.
