It was shocking to neighbours and residents of 35 JB Street, Ekosodin area of Ugbowo-Lagos Road last Saturday, when they watched in disbelief, a man poured petrol on his wife and set her ablaze.
But for their quick intervention, the woman would have been dead by now as a roasted yam.
Meanwhile, the Police were quickly called in and have since arrested and detained the middle aged man simply identified as Onya
The man was alleged to have poured petrol on his wife, Margeret and lit avmatch stick on her, after a disagreement
Margaret who suffered severe burns from the incident is now lying critically ill at a medical facility in Benin City.
According to eyewitnesses, trouble started when Onya refused to attend the burial ceremony of his father in-law.
It was gathered that though the funeral rites of the father in-law had been concluded, the spillover effect triggered the recent disagreement.
Elder brother of the victim, Julius Eteghe described the development as shocking, adding that the incident happened late on Saturday.
On her part, Mrs. Onya, who spoke from her hospital bed said: “We had quarrel and my husband was telling me he will teach me a lesson. After the quarrel, I sat on the chair and my husband was gazing towards one direction. He later stood up, brought petrol and wanted to pour it on me.
“I immediately held the jar; and we were dragging it while I was shouting for help from neighbours. Before I knew it, he turned the petrol into a bucket, poured it on me and lit a match stick. It was my neigbour that rushed into our apartment that put off the fire on me with water,” she stated.
Efforts to reach the State police spokesman, Police SP Abiodun Osifo, was unsuccessful as calls put to his mobile phone went unanswered.
