Crisis Mounts in Edo APC

Ahead September 10 Governorship Election in Edo State, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is forging ahead with a divided house.
Reports reaching The Street Journal indicate that the internal disagreements that erupted after the party’s primaries on June 18 is yet to abate.
A group within the party, known as Benin Consultative Group, Thursday, ignited another fire, which if not handled with care would down the flame of the party in the state.
The group issued a 14-day ultimatum to the state Chairman of the party, Barrister Anslem Ojezua, to retract what it termed insulting and uncomplimentary statements made against the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
The group in a communique signed by its President, Efosa Aguebor, accused the State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, of encouraging Ojezua to launch a tirade of abuse against Oyegun because the APC National Chairman did not support the plot hatched by Oshiomhole and Ojezua in imposing Godwin Obaseki as the APC governorship candidate.
It alleged that instead of acting as unbiased umpire, Ojezua mobilised his state working committee members and used the state resources to publicly procure the party’s governorship ticket for Obaseki.
The group further claimed that Oshiomhole’s alleged denigration of Oyegun was a continuation of sustained abuse of notable Benin sons by the Governor and listed Chief Samuel Ogbemudia, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion and Col. Paul Ogbebor (retd) as some of Benin elders, who the Governor had allegedly insulted
It also alleged that Oshiomhole’s continued his domination of the Edo APC by singlehandedly nominating his political godson and the lawmaker representing Etsako Federal Constituency, Hon Phillip Shaibu, as running mate to Obaseki without consulting Chief Oyegun, the Minister representing Edo State in the Federal Executive Council, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, and APC stakeholders in the state.
The group therefore, advised the Edo APC to learn from what occurred in 1991 when the strongest party in the state then, the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC), lost to the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), following the imposition of Lucky Igbinedion as governorship candidate against the interest of party stakeholders.
“Where was Oshiomhole and his cohorts of Osarodion Ogie, Charles Idahosa, Osaro Idah amongst others when APC lost Edo South in the March 28th, 2015 presidential and National Assembly elections as a result of protests votes against Oshiomhole’s foisting of candidates and boasting on billboards that ‘a vote for Oshiomhole is a vote for Buhari?’
“Let it be known that the current apathy in Edo South is due to Adams Oshiomhole’s foisting Obaseki on Edo State as governorship candidate, which is seen as the actualisation of his reported third term agenda to rule from Iyamho through a surrogate Governor”, the communique said.
