NCC Reiterates Commitment to Protecting Telecom Subscribers Against Fraud

The Director of Consumer Affairs Bureau (CAB), Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Abullahi Maikano, has reiterated the Commission’s commitment to protecting telecommunication subscribers against fraud and exploitation by network providers.
‎Maikano stated this in Benin, Edo state, at the 77 edition of NCC’s Consumers Outreach Programme.
He said the programme was designed to bring together consumers, service providers and regulators on the same platform to address telecom consumers’ related issues.
Maikano who was represented by the Deputy Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, Femi Atoyebi, said the theme of the event, “Information and education as a catalyst for consumer protection,” was chosen because education is identified by the commission as one of the most cost-effective mechanism that guarantees consumers’ protection.
“At NCC, telecom consumers are the target beneficiary of our activities and enjoy primary focus in terms of ensuring that they get good quality service, value for money spent, fair redress of complaints and protected from wholesome practice of some service providers,” he said, adding that apart from serving as a pro-active way of protecting consumers from making wrong choices, it also protect the consumers from being exploited and against fraud.
Maikano however called on subscribers to protect the network providers’ base stations by reporting any act of vandalism to the law enforcement agencies, noting that once they are vandalised, subscribers in that area would be affected in terms of quality services.
He assured that complaints by consumers at the programme are well captured and would be attended to by the commission without delay.
Also speaking, the Coordinator, Consumers Advocacy Group, Bar Ayola Oke, lamented that network providers are not giving adequate information on their base station and other services to subscribers, saying such information would enable them make get better choice.
